How do I find the right Hospitalist Job?
Selecting the right hospitalist job involves a careful consideration of both the job and the community in which it is located. Hospitalist positions are available in facilities that range in size from small community-based hospitals to large academic medical centers, and are located in rural, urban, and suburban areas throughout the country. In appraising the prospective hospitalist job, such factors as the prospective compensation package, the size of the facility, the number of physician colleagues, and scope of practice may be relatively easy to evaluate. Others factors, such as the cultural life at the prospective hospital, are subjective and potentially more difficult to assess. Some questions a physician may want to consider regarding the hospital’s culture include:
- Does the hospital practice team-based care?
- Does the administration share the physicians’ commitment to patient-centered care?
- Does the hospital offer opportunities for mentorship and professional growth?
Beyond the hospitalist job itself, a physician may also scrutinize the lifestyle options that are available. Each prospective community offers distinctive cultural, recreational, educational, and residential opportunities for the physician and his or her family.
