University of Pennsylvania
CHIEF WELLNESS OFFICER
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) seeks a highly collaborative and transformational thought leader in student health and wellness to serve in the newly created role of Chief Wellness Officer. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished and forward-thinking health and wellness leader to galvanize and direct wellness initiatives across the university, forging a vibrant campus-wide culture of wellness, communicating wellness as one of the university's core values, and defining Penn as a leader in wellness among peer universities.

The University recently embarked on a focused Wellness at Penn campaign which has included a Wellness at Penn website to provide central access to resources and events, Campus Conversations focused on wellness with both students and senior leaders, and a Wellness Advisory Group of students, staff, and faculty. The Chief Wellness Officer will take this campaign to the next level, further refining and implementing innovative, multidisciplinary programming addressing the physical, psychological, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of Penn's diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional student population. S/he will be committed to seeing wellness as holistic and multi-dimensional, encompassing such issues as stress management, mental health, resilience, happiness, personal and academic goals, and the meaning of success. S/he will be the primary advocate and ambassador for wellness at Penn, spreading the message both internally and externally about the importance of wellness and about Penn's leading position in developing innovative wellness platforms, programs, and messaging to encourage self-care and interpersonal connectedness and promote coping and stress management.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for University Life as an Associate Vice Provost for University Life, and working in close collaboration with the Provost, the Chief Wellness Officer (CWO) will play a pivotal role in strengthening - through the integration of state-of-the-art programming and collaborative leadership models - the fabric of Penn's overall student health and wellness. Charged with transitioning the university's current wellness resources toward a more seamlessly integrated model, the CWO will at all times ensure the provision of world-class student-centered services that are professional, highly responsive, and of unquestioned ethical standards. To that end, all health and wellness programs will be founded on principles of inclusion through the active engagement of students; the integration of physical and behavioral health programming; the participation of all stakeholders who advance student health and wellness; and the rigorous use of evidence-based practice.

The ideal candidate will have earned an MD, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree and be considered a thought leader in student health and wellness, with deep understanding of the complexity of urban academic settings with a diverse student body. This highly visible leadership role will require outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to serve as the public face for wellness at Penn and to interact effectively with a wide range of constituencies, including students, university leadership, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents. Broad understanding of contemporary physical and mental health issues in adolescent and young adult populations and evidence-based best practices will be important, as will an appreciation for and interest in leading the development of innovative strategies, including the use of technology, to enhance access to a broad range of health and wellness programs and services.
