Northwell Health and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, in partnership with Korn Ferry, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Senior Vice President and Chair, Department of Medicine.
As New York State's largest private employer and healthcare provider and one of the nation's largest healthcare systems, Northwell Health includes a network of collaborators, research pioneers, entrepreneurs, and educators - 104,000+ strong - daring to look at healthcare differently while caring for a service area of over 13 million people. With a $22.6 billion annual operating budget, Northwell Health delivers world-class clinical care throughout the New York metropolitan area, pioneering research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and training the next generation of medical professionals through the visionary Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
The Zucker School of Medicine/Northwell trains more than 2,600 residents and fellows in over 250 programs and 140 specialties, and for five years in a row, they are the most awarded health system in the New York tri-state area, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report's 2025-26 Best Hospitals rankings. Seven hospitals ranked among the best in New York State and four - North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, and Glen Cove Hospital - combined to earn top 50 national rankings in 26 adult specialties. NSUH, LIJ, and Lenox each tied for the fifth-best hospital in New York, while Huntington Hospital tied for 15th, and South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore ranked 17th. Staten Island University Hospital tied for No. 19 along with Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, formerly part of Nuvance Health, which recently joined Northwell. The merger, completed in May, created the largest not-for-profit health system in the Northeast with 28 hospitals, more than 1,050 ambulatory care locations, and 73 urgent care locations.
Today, Northwell provides seamless, coordinated care for over 2 million patients annually through more than 13,500 credentialed physicians, including over 7,300 employed doctors and nearly 4,500 members of Northwell Health Physician Partners; 22,000+ nurses; and more than 3,700 volunteers. Northwell Health contributes over $2.5 billion in community benefit, 12.7% of operating expenses, by participating in more than 13,000 community health programs and training 39,000 health professionals. Established in 2008, the Zucker School of Medicine was founded by two equal partners: Hofstra University and Northwell Health. The Zucker School of Medicine was built upon the strong clinical and graduate medical education programs of Northwell Health, as well as the robust research and academic programs of both Hofstra University and Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
Over the past decade and with the establishment of the Zucker School of Medicine, Northwell Health has become a leading academic health system, advancing the tripartite mission while caring for one of the most diverse patient populations in the world. Critical to their continued growth and success is the recruitment of a Senior Vice President and Chair for the Department of Medicine. A national search is underway.
The Chair of the Department of Medicine will be responsible for providing leadership over the Department and Service Line, including its staff, faculty, graduate and medical students, fellows, and other scientists. They will be accountable for carrying out the missions of the Department and Service Line, clinical care, research, and education, as well as overseeing all operations, management, and financial performance of the Department and Service Line. They will be a leader of leaders, nurturing a collaborative training environment with strong mentorship that fosters intellectual creativity and instills passion in the next generation of clinicians and scientists to perform fundamental basic, clinical, and translational research. Further, the Chair will be tasked with fostering an environment of collaboration, integrity, trust, and transparency within the Department as well as across the broader Northwell Health enterprise. Reporting to David L. Battinelli, MD, Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief of Northwell Health and Deborah and Lawrence Smith Dean, Zucker School of Medicine, the Chair will be a major institutional leader, partnering with key constituency groups in and outside of the Department of Medicine, effectively collaborating across North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the Zucker School of Medicine, and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. This new Chair will have the opportunity to further expand the Department with a number of new faculty recruitments and is expected to continue to shape the Department for national recognition.
Candidates will have earned an MD, MD/PhD, or DO, have demonstrated leadership experience within a complex and dynamic academic health system and/or medical school, and be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. All candidates must be board certified and eligible for licensure in the state of New York.
